Training
New guidelines handed down by the Department for Planning & Infrastructure (DPI) in February 2006 for recreational skippers, sees the need for every skipper of a vessel of 6hp or more, required by law to hold a Recreational Skippers Ticket (RST).  The new laws are now in place as of April 2008 (April 2007 for skippers under the age of 25).

The Western Australian Yachting Foundation is a Registered Training Establishment (RTE) with Yachting Western Australia & the Department for Planning and Infrastructure.

The Foundation offers numerous programs to provide the training for the qualifications as required by DPI, what ever your boating experience level may be.

The programs run over weekends and some mid week, tailored to suit full time workers who may wish to complete their qualifications on weekends or after hours.  The level of experience of the candidate will determine the courses that are required to be completed to obtain the RST qualification.  Please contact the Foundation to determine exactly what requirements are needed to suit your level of experience.  You can refer to the flowchart below to get an understanding of what may be required for you to comply with the regulations.

To find out more about the programs that the Foundation has on offer from the grounds of Royal Perth Yacht Club, please contact Skip Lissiman on 9386 9488 or email; skip@wayf.org.au
Before your assessment you will be required to provide the following:

  1. Eyesight Declaration – a valid Western Australian Drivers License will be accepted as proof of adequate eyesight.
  2. Medical Fitness Declaration – a self declared medical statement is required before you can obtain the RST.
  3. Letter of Consent – if you are under 18 years of age, you must have a letter of consent signed by your parent or legal guardian before assessment.
  4. Proof of Identity – Valid passport or driver's license with a photo is adequate.
